SEOUL, April 19 (Yonhap) — Samsung Electronics Co. regained its position as the world’s number one smartphone marketer in the first quarter on strong sales of its new Galaxy S23 series, but its gap with Apple Inc. remains narrow , showed a report by market research firm Canalys on Wednesday. The company was dethroned by Apple in the fourth quarter of last year.

The South Korean tech giant captured 22% of the global smartphone market at the end of the January-March period, 1 percentage point more than the bitten apple brand. Their respective market shares were 20% and 25% in the fourth quarter of last year. “Samsung is the only major seller to achieve a QoQ recovery,” Canalys noted. Samsung launched its new series of Galaxy S23 models in February.

That said, Samsung’s market share fell 2 percentage points from the first quarter of last year. Apple, for its part, saw its market share increase by 3 points year-on-year. Their gap narrowed considerably during this period, going from 6 to 1 percentage point. They were followed by Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, which respectively occupied 11%, 10% and 8% of the market in the first quarter. The global smartphone market contracted by 12% year-on-year over the period in question.
