Samsung rolls out final security update

Samsung has just launched the deployment of a “surprise” update on the Galaxy S9. While the two smartphones in the range are officially obsolete, a security update has appeared offering performance improvements.

Beginning of April 2022, Samsung withdrew the Galaxy S9 from the list of smartphones that receive monthly updates or quarterly updates. The range, consisting of the Galaxy S9 and S9+, has completely disappeared from the distribution list. The two old jewels are officially obsolete. They have indeed reached the end of the 4 years of software support promised by the brand.

Against all odds, Samsung has nevertheless launched the deployment of a new update on the Galaxy S9. As reported by our colleagues from Droid Life, the update is currently arriving on phones sold by the American operator Verizon. The firmware should spread to other models, and to other countries, in the coming days.

The update includes the March 2022 Android security patch. According to the changelog that accompanies the firmware, the update also offers “performance improvements”. Unfortunately, Samsung does not say more about the optimizations made to the software. It is unknown what prompted the company to release an update after the end of software support date.

To install it, just go to Settings > Software Update and click on Download and install. Before starting the installation, make sure your phone has at least 50% battery.

We can assume that the brand wanted fix a series of bugs emerged recently before abandoning software tracking altogether. Sometimes Samsung continues to provide updates on outdated smartphones for several months. Nevertheless, it should probably be the last update offered on the Galaxy S9 range.

Sometimes Samsung rolls out more updates than expected. For example, the Galaxy Note 9, which has had to make do with quarterly monitoring since last year, has continued to receive firmwares every monthfor no apparent reason.
