Samsung’s Next-Gen Smart Glasses to Feature Color Display, Launch Expected in 2027

Samsung has officially initiated development on its second-generation smart glasses featuring an integrated color display, targeting a commercial release in late 2027 or early 2028. According to a report from The Elec, the hardware will project concise data like text and navigation arrows directly onto the lenses using a microdisplay measuring 0.2 inches or smaller.

The race for smart eyewear is shifting from audio-only prototypes to true heads-up computing. While Samsung’s first-generation smart glasses—unveiled a few months ago and discussed by Jay Kim at MWC alongside Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon—rely strictly on audio and a connected phone, a camera at eye level, and a tethered smartphone, the tech giant is already planning a major hardware evolution.

That evolution requires navigating severe optical engineering bottlenecks.

Engineering a Compact Microdisplay for Everyday Frames

Fitting a functional display inside a standard eyeglass frame is no small feat. Samsung sent a formal request to Samsung Display last month outlining strict requirements for form factor, active display area, color reproduction, and target pricing.

The specifications target an ultra-compact panel measuring 0.2 inches or less. An optical magnification system will then project images from this microdisplay directly into the user’s field of view (FOV).

Unlike competitors such as the Meta Ray-Ban Display, which position data on one side of the glass, Samsung aims to project glanceable information directly in front of the eye. This includes system icons, text notifications, and turn-by-turn navigation arrows.

Rich multimedia playback isn’t the goal here. Samsung is designing the panels around a 4-bit gradation level, producing 16 brightness levels per color channel. Prioritizing sharp legibility for interface elements over photos and videos keeps power draw manageable and physical footprints tiny.

Weighing W-OLEDoS Against MicroLED Alternatives

The primary engineering hurdle remains achieving a wide field of view while balancing color output and production yields. Samsung faces a critical architecture choice for its display stack.

Industry insiders point to White OLEDoS (W-OLEDoS) as the most commercially viable route. By combining white OLEDs on a silicon backplane with color filters, W-OLEDoS benefits from mature manufacturing yields and lower baseline costs.

Alternative technologies present steeper roadblocks:

  • RGB OLEDoS: Delivers direct color without filters, but incurs significantly higher manufacturing costs and lower production yields.
  • LEDoS (MicroLED on Silicon): Offers superior brightness, but full-color integration and mass-production yields remain major bottlenecks.

Samsung has not yet finalized whether it will deploy a monocular configuration using a single display for one eye or a binocular setup utilizing displays for both eyes.

Timeline and Ecosystem Context

The development push runs parallel to the impending rollout of Samsung’s first-generation smart glasses. Confirmed by Jay Kim during a CNBC interview at Mobile World Congress, those initial devices will feature an eye-level camera and deep smartphone integration driven by AI capable of understanding where the user is looking.

Kim previously declined to confirm display hardware for that initial 2026 hardware release, noting that users can rely on existing smartphones or smartwatches if a visual display is required. Google has likewise been positioning its Android XR ecosystem for incoming smart glasses hardware, though Samsung is keeping its options open with devices built both with and without integrated displays.

With display requirements now formally submitted to Samsung Display, the color-equipped successor is scheduled to arrive in the second half of 2027 or the first half of 2028.

The 30-Second Verdict: Samsung is aggressively staking its claim in the post-smartphone wearable space.
