Samsung’s ‘SmartThings’ controls 13 home appliance brands… First demonstration at IFA

Samsung’s smart home platform ‘SmartThings’ will be able to control up to 13 home appliance brands including LG Electronics.

The ‘Home Connectivity Alliance’ (HCA), created by global home appliance companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, introduced a connection service between third-party devices at ‘IFA 2022’, Europe’s largest consumer electronics show held in Germany on the 3rd (local time).

HCA was established in August last year to expand the smart home ecosystem, and 13 global home appliance companies, including Samsung and LG Electronics, General Electric (GE), and Electrolux, are participating.

HCA CEO Yunho Choi demonstrated the remote control of third-party home appliances through the Samsung SmartThings app on the same day, such as a washing machine from Grundig, a German home appliance company, a GE oven, and a dishwasher from Vestel, Turkey.

When the HCA standard is applied, third-party products can be controlled through the smart home platforms of 13 participating companies, including ‘LG ThinQ’ as well as Samsung SmartThings.

Samsung Electronics is planning to introduce this service in the first half of next year, and LG Electronics is also pushing to introduce it.

The day before, HCA announced that representatives of participating companies, including Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and LG Electronics H&A Business Division Vice President Ryu Jae-cheol, also attended the demonstration.

HCA is currently building a system to control 42 major functions in 15 product groups, including refrigerators, washing machines, and TVs.

Whirlpool of the US, Bosch of Germany, and Panasonic of Japan have not yet joined among major global home appliance companies, but HCA said that it is trying to expand the participating companies.

CEO Choi said, “This year, we are focusing on the connection between devices of other companies, and from next year we will focus on energy management through the connection between devices.
