The race for megapixels has been raging on smartphones for several years. It is particularly pushed by Samsung, part of whose photo strategy focuses on increasing the definition of sensors. Latest example, the Galaxy S23 Ultra and its 200 megapixel sensor.

We have known for several weeks that the manufacturer would like to go even further with the development of a 440 megapixel sensor, but we will have to be patient.

Not before the Galaxy S26 Ultra

It’s the leaker @Tech_Reve which has been discussing the idea of a 440 megapixel sensor by Samsung since this summer. It would be more precisely 432 megapixels and would be marketed under two references with very similar characteristics: IsoCell HW1 and HW2. The size would be close to an inch.

Above all, we absolutely should not wait for the Galaxy S24 Ultra expected at the start of 2024, or even for the Galaxy S25. Indeed, according to the leaker, we would have to at least wait for the Galaxy S26 Ultra to see this project come to fruition. Suffice to say that this is a leak that should be taken with a pinch of salt. With such a schedule, and even if the leaker was right, there would be time for Samsung to rethink its objective or even abandon such a project.

Regardless, this indicates that Samsung wants to continue to drastically increase the number of megapixels in its smartphones. The firm will also need to continue to develop Exynos chips capable of managing as many pixels.
