San Diego State University Joins the Pac-12 Conference in 2026

San Diego State Kicks Off Its Historic Pac-12 Era Against Portland State

This transition follows a transformative period for the university. On July 1, 2026, SDSU officially integrated into the Pac-12 conference alongside league stalwarts Oregon State and Washington State, as well as fellow newcomers Boise State, Colorado State, and Fresno State.

A Transformational Realignment Rooted in Decades of Mountain West Success

The journey to the Pac-12 represents a massive structural evolution for San Diego State athletics. According to statements released by the university, SDSU spent 26 successful years as a founding member of the Mountain West Conference, capturing a record 96 league titles across its sponsored sports. University leadership views the move as a vital economic and institutional upgrade.

“While we are grateful to be a founding member of the Mountain West with 26 years of success in the conference, we are excited at what lies ahead with these new opportunities,” said San Diego State director of athletics John David Wicker via SDSU News. “We will continue to compete for conference championships on the field and to graduate leaders in the community.”

SDSU President Adela de la Torre echoed that sentiment when the initial invitation was accepted, emphasizing the broader institutional benefits. “The move to the Pac-12 is a transformative moment for our entire university,” de la Torre stated according to SDSU News. “Joining the Pac-12 opens the door to exciting partnerships and financial growth, all of which will contribute to the success of our student-athletes and the vitality of our university community.”

Building a National Brand on the Gridiron and in the Classroom

The Aztecs enter the Pac-12 with formidable athletic credentials. Since the fall of 2010, San Diego State boasts a combined .727 winning percentage in football and men’s basketball, ranking first nationally ahead of powerhouse programs like Ohio State (.726) and Oregon (.713), as noted in official university records. Beyond team sports, individual athletes continue to elevate the brand globally, including former men’s golf standout Xander Schauffele winning two major championships in 2024, and track star Shanieka Ricketts securing an Olympic silver medal in the triple jump.

Academic performance remains a cornerstone of the athletic department’s identity. In April prior to the transition, 366 SDSU student-athletes earned scholar-athlete recognition for maintaining a semester GPA of 3.20 or higher or a cumulative mark above 3.0, while 38 students achieved a flawless 4.0 GPA to earn Malik Award distinction.

Charting the Future of College Athletics in the West

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould underscored the historic weight of the expansion. “For over a century, the Pac-12 Conference has been recognized as a leading brand in intercollegiate athletics,” Gould said in an official statement via SDSU News. “We will continue to pursue bold cutting-edge opportunities for growth and progress, to best serve our member institutions and student-athletes.”
