San Jose, the largest city in the Bay Area, has moved out of the top 10 largest US cities by population, according to the most recent data from the US Census Bureau.

The city was long ranked No. 10 with just under 1 million residents, but is now the 12th largest city in the country.

Known as the heart of the technology industry and Silicon Valley, San Jose has lost thousands of residents in recent years.

“It is concerning that in the Bay Area and the city of San José so many people have moved, and it is a wake-up call for the entire region and the city. When you ask people why they leave, they say it’s because of the high cost of living and quality of life issues like homelessness, crime, trash on the streets,” explained Matt Mahan, the city’s mayor.

Mahan said this is a call that change is needed, and that he will propose to the Council a budget that prioritizes affordable housing and more money for the police department.

According to the Census Bureau, as of July 2022, the five largest cities in the US are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. Austin, Texas, and Jacksonville, Florida advanced and drove out San Jose, population 971,233.

That’s a 1% drop from the previous year and a drop of more than 4% since April 2020, census data shows.

“Austin, Texas has now become a center of the technology industry, with some companies moving from Silicon Valley to there as the pandemic scattered employees working remotely,” said Alex Stettinski, president of the Downtown Association. Saint Joseph.

Stettinski assured that he believes in a few years the city will return to 10th place, but that the businesses in downtown San José were very impacted because the city was one of the last to reopen after the pandemic, while Jacksonville and Austin reopened much faster. .

In downtown San José, Adolfo Gómez, owner of the Mezcal restaurant, confirms that his business has not yet recovered from the damage caused by the pandemic.

“I don’t know to what degree, but in the end of course it will affect us, that is, if we would like to return to being the number 10 city, but we would also like to return to being the safest city in the country,” said Gómez.

Meanwhile, San Francisco ranks 17th with a population of 808,444, about a half-percent drop from the previous year.

So where do those people go? Not surprising: Texas and Florida. Both states have lower taxes and depending on where you look for cheaper housing.
