The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the central and state governments on a PIL seeking to issue directives to provide free sanitary pads to girls studying in classes six to 12 in government schools across the country.

Madhya Pradesh Social Worker Dr. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha heard Jaya Thakur’s plea and issued notices to the central government and all states and union territories. The reply should be given by the second week of January. Copies of the petitions were also directed to be given to the States through the Standing Counsel.

Adolescent children find it difficult to get knowledge about menstruation and menstrual hygiene from poorly educated parents. The petition states that this causes serious health consequences and causes dropouts in schools.
