Sante Fe Man Arrested After Fleeing State Police – Multiple Charges Filed

A Santa Fe man was arrested and faces several charges after attempting to flee state police by vehicle and on foot. The incident happened on Thursday, Aug. 3.A New Mexico State Police officer was called to investigate a vehicle theft of a white Lincoln SUV in Glorieta. Police were also told the incident in Santa Fe County was domestic violence related.NMSP located a woman who said the dispute with a man, later identified as 39-year-old Steven Jimenez, was verbal but never became physical. The female victim was told the vehicle could not be considered stolen, since he’s also a listed owner.Police were able to confirm that Jimenez cut off the ankle monitor that he was ordered to wear in July, according to court documents. The female victim also told the NMSP officer that he said he was going to San Juan.The officer was traveling south on State Road 63 when they noticed the SUV traveling in the opposite direction. NMSP said the officer and Jimenez made eye contact in passing.As the state officer turned around on State Road 63, so did Jimenez. The officer then saw Jimenez drive head-on toward a Ford truck, causing it to make a complete stop. NMSP did note the brake lights were not being used by Jimenez, according to court documents.Police then turned on lights and sirens to pull over the SUV. Jimenez then began to travel south using northbound lanes, according to NMSP. A second vehicle was driven off the road by Jimenez, who was noted again for not using his brakes. A third vehicle was also intentionally driven off the road.As the chase continued, Jimenez turned onto Caballo Lane and the police vehicle followed. Jimenez tried to turn around but rear-ended the NMSP vehicle. The officer stated they were traveling about 40 mph and said Jimenez appeared to be driving faster than that.A fourth vehicle experienced the attempted head-on collision by Jimenez, but pulled off to the shoulder. The suspect vehicle was traveling close to 90 mph and later exceeded that speed, according to court documents.A fifth vehicle was also forced to make a completed stop on State Road 63 due to the driving of Jimenez. NMSP then attempted to stop the vehicle by striking it on the driver’s rear side.After police made vehicle contact, Jimenez allegedly tried to throw a tire iron at the state officer. The suspect was able to get back on lanes traveling north.Instead of pursuing a vehicle, Jimenez spotted a bicyclist and tried to hit them. She was able to maneuver around the pursuing vehicle by taking the bike off road and stopping.The state officer attempted to hit the vehicle again, but Jimenez turned around and traveling head on at the pursuing police vehicle. Both evaded each other, and the NMSP officer stated it was the seventh time Jimenez had driven at someone head-on.Jimenez tried to turn around once again but failed to do so and exited the vehicle. He approached the NMSP and punched the passenger side window and front windshield, shattering the latter.He then tried to enter the police vehicle, but the driver reversed away, according to court documents. Jimenez then started to run southbound on State Road 63 to avoid police.A nearby driver got out of his vehicle to help police make the arrest. Jimenez shoved the man to try and steal his vehicle. However, he held onto Jimenez and got him to the ground. Jimenez was then taken into custody, he was examined by emergency medical services at the scene and was then transported to a Las Vegas hospital. After his release, Jimenez was booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center.Jimenez has been charged with nine total counts: three counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, another aggravated assault and battery charge, resisting and evading police, property damage, along with unlawfully taking a vehicle.He will be held without bond.
