Snow sculpture-making began on the 28th under sunny skies, and participants checked the blueprints and marked the 3-meter-high snow blocks prepared in advance with spray paint.

They worked carefully, digging into the snow with shovels and chisels, and sweeping away fine snow with brooms.

According to the executive committee, this year they will also create a work themed around Shohei Otani, who joined the Major League Dodgers.

A man who was making a seal snow sculpture with his co-workers said, “The key is how well we can carve out the roundness of the head. I want to do my best to make it look like Hokkaido.”

Another woman who was making a snow sculpture of a penguin said, “The snow is harder than I expected and it’s difficult. It’s my first time making a snow sculpture, so I want to keep an eye on the people around me as I work.”

The Sapporo Snow Festival will be held from February 4th to 11th.
