Thiruvananthapuram – Public Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said that the government will go ahead with the position of making Saturday the study day in the schools of the state. The aim is to provide 210 academic days. The minister also said that the government’s move will not affect extra-curricular subjects. He clarified that the teachers’ unions have the right to express their opinion and the objection was not noticed.

“The decision taken by the government has been implemented. The class has already started from the first Saturday. Everyone cooperated everywhere. Parents and children are happy. There are no other issues.”- said Shivankutty. The minister had earlier clarified that the summer vacation will start on April 6 in subsequent years due to the increase in academic days and schools will open on June 1 as usual.

KSTA, a pro-CPM teachers union, had come forward against the reforms of the Public Education Department, including making Saturday a working day. The KSTA State Committee said that the reforms in the education sector should be implemented through discussion and taking the teaching community into confidence. KSTA General Secretary N.T.Sivarajan demanded that the educational calendar should be discussed with the teachers’ organizations and implemented without any controversies and subject to scientific studies.
