Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz sent an invitation to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on Wednesday, to participate in the Arab Summit to be held in Riyadh on May 19, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The invitation was delivered by the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, Nayef bin Bandar Al-Sudairy, during his meeting with Al-Assad in Damascus.

“SPA” added: “Ambassador Al-Sudairy conveyed the greetings of King Salman and Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister to the Syrian President, and their wishes for security and stability to the brotherly government and people of Syria, while the Syrian President conveyed his greetings and appreciation to them, and to the government and people of Saudi Arabia for further progress and continued progress and development.” .

The Syrian presidency announced the news earlier on Wednesday, noting that the invitation is the first that Damascus has received since the outbreak of the war in Syria in 2011.

And last Sunday, the League of Arab States decided to restore Syria to its seat, after suspending its membership for nearly 12 years.

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said: “Syria’s return to occupying the seat is the beginning of a movement, not the end, in the sense that the settlement path of the Syrian crisis will take a stage of procedures.”

He added, “Syrian President Bashar al-Assad can participate in the League summit if he so desires.”

Recently, some Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE, returned to dealing with Syria through visits and high-level meetings.
