There is a simple trick for saving electricity costs. All you need to make it work is a flashlight or cell phone light.
Many people already have a digital electricity meter at home. However, very few people actually deal with it. The meter can certainly help to save electricity.
YouTuber Sebastian regularly publishes videos on the subject of home improvement and do-it-yourself on his channel “Basti HW”. In a video, he shows a function of the electricity meter that only very few people know. He explains how they can be used in a targeted manner to reduce power consumption.

The prerequisite: It must be a digital electricity meter. Analog or older measuring devices do not have this display option. By 2032, however, all households in Germany should be equipped with a digital electricity meter. At first glance, the hidden button is hardly noticeable. The flashlight symbol can only be seen if you take a closer look.
Behind it is an optical button that can be operated with a flashlight or cell phone light. You simply shine the light cone onto the sensor. The display changes and the test field appears, on which all digits can be seen. If you light up the button again, the next function appears. When you use it for the first time, you will be asked to enter a PIN. All functions are then permanently activated.
This is how the flashlight trick helps to save electricity
You can obtain the PIN from your meter operator. In most cases, this is the local power grid operator. You can request the code there free of charge online or by telephone. Together with the PIN you will receive instructions – here, too, the entry is made via light signals. The number increases as soon as you hit the sensor with a cone of light.
If the PIN entry was correct, the other functions will be activated. Now you can see the current power in watts, marked by a “P” on the left edge. If you press the optical button again, the display changes and you get the power consumption of the last 24 hours. You can switch through the program and display consumption over the past seven, 30 or 365 days.
The electricity meter at the top right shows whether electricity is fed in from a balcony power plant or a PV system (-A) or whether the electricity comes from a public grid (+A). But how does that help to save electricity? With the hidden function, you can quickly and easily see how high the consumption of individual devices in your house is. This will give you a better sense of how much electricity you are actually using and where you can best save.
