The prices of food products have soared in recent months in our supermarkets. Labor costs, VAT, indirect taxes (such as excise duties), or even purchase prices/wholesale prices are involved and explain the price difference with neighboring countries.

To overcome this problem, some have decided to desert Belgian supermarkets and go abroad to do their shopping. According Purchasing test, citizens who live on the French border can save an average of 9% on a weekly basket, and up to 19% if it is made up of international brands. The biggest price difference concerns dairy products (33%) and cereals (34%). Bottled water is also less expensive in France: -64% for Evian!

The cheapest products in Belgium

However, not everything is more expensive in Belgium. Olive oil, sunflower oil, mayonnaise and spread are for example sold cheaper with us.

Fresh fish and overall cheaper in Belgium, compared to Germany. But it is in the Netherlands that it is most affordable.

Potatoes, fruit and vegetables are cheap in Germany. In Belgium, they remain inexpensive compared to France, Luxembourg, or the Netherlands.

According to the survey of Purchasing test, meat remains relatively affordable in our country compared to our neighbours. It is sold on average 8% more expensive in France, 23% in the Netherlands, 26% in Luxembourg and… 38% in Germany!

The most affordable supermarkets

As far as the big brands are concerned, Luxembourg Colruyt is on average 5.9% cheaper than Belgian Colruyt (13.2% for international brands). Carrefour is also more expensive in Belgium than in France with a difference of 17.6%, and 27.3% for the major brands.

The most affordable supermarkets in the Netherlands are Dirk and Jumbo. In France, Leclerc is the cheapest and is followed by CoursesU. In Germany you have to go to Rewe and Bringmeister (Edeka) to get good deals.
