The NGO Save the Children has warned this Friday that some 4,000 boys and girls are at risk of suffering “abuse and abandonment” in the main Mexican border cities with the United States, whose authorities have insisted that the borders are not open despite the expiration of Title 42.
The announcement of the end of Title 42, the legislation implemented by the government of former President Donald Trump during the pandemic that allowed hot returns at the borders, has attracted some 15,000 people to the region with the “hope of crossing into US territory, and the vast majority sleep on the streets or in overcrowded shelters.
“The situation can be very critical, we could say that there are almost 4,000 girls and boys who are exposed to significant risks such as violence, abuse, serious effects on their physical and mental health and even family separation (…). Families are desperate and many of them may be willing to risk their lives trying to cross the border through dangerous points such as the desert or the Rio Grande,” said the director of Save the Children in Mexico, Maripina Menéndez, in a statement.
Save the Children has ensured that exposure to these risks adds to “anxiety, fear and uncertainty”, feelings that are intensified by doubts about their future and after fleeing poverty and violence in their countries of origin.
“The truth is that it makes me sad to know that we cannot try to cross, now with the application (CBP One) we hope to enter in a good way, but the process is very slow and unclear, I try not to tell my children anything, but if they They notice and see me very sad. Menéndez has explained how the organization has witnessed the return of migrants to Mexican territory, and has expressed concern about the “neglect” of children due to the “high stress” suffered by parents, and has reported the presence of mafias in the zone whose objective is to “bribe” or “recruit” migrants.
The organization has called on the Mexican government to “strengthen internal programs and policies for the protection of children and adolescents,” and has ensured that they have an “important responsibility” with respect to guaranteeing the Human Rights of all migrants who arrive in the region. .
