Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that its use of 3D printing technology contributed to saving more than 509.6 thousand dirhams during the years 2021 and 2022, by manufacturing about 1,800 spare parts for the production, transportation and distribution sectors in the 3D printing laboratory in the Authority’s Research and Development Center. As well as saving effort and time required to replace spare parts.

And the authority stated in a statement yesterday that the average time required to provide printed spare parts is four days, which supports the operational operations of the authority.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said, “The authority supports Dubai’s strategy for 3D printing, which aims to harness this promising technology to serve humanity, and to strengthen the UAE’s position to become a global center for the development of 3D printing technologies.”

He added, “Through the Authority’s Research and Development Center, we are keen to develop 3D printing technologies, manufacturing, and other innovative technologies that are used internally to print spare parts for devices and equipment, which contributes to reducing procurement time and cost reduction, in addition to extending the life span of these equipment.” equipment, and to promote innovation in the body ».

Al Tayer pointed out that the 3D printing center in the Authority’s Research and Development Center includes multiple 3D printing systems that can manufacture spare parts for various business units in the Authority using more than 20 materials covering various engineering applications, including metals and high-performance thermoplastics.

In turn, Executive Vice President of the Business Development and Excellence Sector at the Authority, Eng. Walid bin Salman, said that the Authority adopts 3D printing technology as one of the innovative solutions for building models and manufacturing spare parts internally, pointing out that technical sectors around the world face a number of challenges such as equipment obsolescence or Some parts are discontinued or not sold as parts, which comes with a higher cost to replace the entire system.

Patents

The number of patent applications registered by DEWA’s Research and Development Center at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex has reached 23, of which six have been obtained so far.

Among the patents registered by the center are three patents related to 3D printing.

In addition, the center has published 157 research papers in international scientific conferences and international peer-reviewed journals and periodicals, including 14 research papers on 3D printing.
