Before the match in the Abe Lenstra Stadium, the club’s supporters, sponsors and former players who died in the past year were commemorated. This was done with a special show and a minute of applause.
Chances for Heerenveen, but Go Ahead scores
The opening phase of the match was not as impressive as the commemoration was. It started slowly. Although the Frisians had some chances in the first half hour, Heerenveen did not really come close to a goal.
In the 56th minute, Go Ahead Eagles took the lead against odds. Mats Deijl shot a free kick against the post just under 30 meters from the goal, after which Jakob Breum netted the rebound.
Breum even seemed to double the lead with an hour on the clock, but goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart was able to clear the ball from the intersection.
Loizou makes his debut
Heerenveen then went in search of the equalizer with substitute and debutant Loizos Loizou. However, the energy in Kees van Wonderen’s team seemed to be lacking in the final phase. When Victor Edvardsen made it 0-2 in the 92nd minute, Heerenveen’s fate was finally sealed.
Heerenveen is now in twelfth place in the Premier League with 25 points from 22 games.
