Scabies is a skin disease caused by a parasite. Scabies does not cause serious health consequences. However, the itching is very unpleasant.
What are the symptoms of scabies?
If they occur, the symptoms are:
- intense itching, especially at night
- red furrows and bumps in the folds of the fingers, wrists, elbows, ankles, waist, breasts, groins, and genitals
How is the parasite that causes scabies transmitted?
- During skin contact with an infested person
- Upon contact with a contaminated object, such as clothing, bedding, or furniture
What should I do if I have symptoms of scabies?
If you think you have the symptoms of scabies, you can get tested. In most cases, the screening test consists of taking a vaginal swab (which you can do yourself) or a urine test. In some cases a blood test is necessary.
