Scandal surrounding cholesterol-lowering drugs in Japan

157 people in Japan have already had to be treated in hospital after taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, and five deaths that may be related to the drugs are also being investigated. The cholesterol-lowering drugs based on red yeast rice were available over the counter in Japan. Last week, manufacturer Kobayashi Pharmaceutical recalled five products after people were hospitalized with kidney problems after taking them. The company said a potentially toxic acid produced by the mold was discovered at one of its plants.

VKI warns of side effects

The recalled products all contain rice fermented with red mold. Red fermented rice – which should not be confused with red rice varieties – is used in East Asia to color foods such as salad marinades, bread and soy paste, but also as a medicine.

Food supplements based on red yeast rice are also available in Austria. They are advertised as cholesterol-lowering drugs. The Consumer Information Association warns of side effects. It is said that taking these preparations is associated with considerable risks.
