Lately it’s been common for lost bands to re-emerge on the scene with new energy. That’s what happened with Scavengerwhose origins lie in a debut album in the mid-1980s and which was followed by a very long silence.

For all of us, heavy metal is an attitude to life that gave us enough adrenaline when we were young. We all hang on to this exhilaration of past bliss in our memories. That’s why you can do it Scavenger Also don’t blame the fact that they appeared out of nowhere and hit the stages in 2018.

New team on old course

What seems a bit strange is the fact that the old… Scavenger, the initial cast, there is probably no one left on board at the moment. The last original member was the drummer Luke Ebinger and he put the drumsticks to rest around 2020.

In addition to better production in modern times, another unmistakable fact is that there is now a woman behind the microphone. That sounds like a break in style and perhaps a renaming would have made sense at this point. But it is said that the new ones Scavenger started with the support of the old crew.

Playing live at festivals feels like it’s only half the battle. That’s why they went into the studio in 2020 and wrote a two-track EP on their own, which is also the current CD edition of Beyond The Bells was added as a bonus. Metal, rooted in earlier days, demands a corresponding label. That’s why the Greeks were from No Remorse Records Probably the very best choice for the cool, but very traditional 1980s sound.

Welcome Home

There’s no better way to describe it, because… Beyond The Bells In terms of feel and style, it sounds like it did forty years ago. This is not intended to be a negative criterion, but it does distinguish the Belgians from other chapels today. Lots of other bands on No Remorse Records try to bring heavy metal to a more modern level through new influences and a powerful and adapted production. Scavenger on the other hand, optimize the old traditional sound. The production holds back with excessive pressure and makes the instruments sound rich in detail.

Of course the current front woman falls Keep Lucifer immediately in your ear. With her snotty organ she fits perfectly into the mostly fast numbers. She brings back memories of the female compatriots of Acid and sings dirtier than Doro Pesch to Warlock-times. So that everyone knows what it’s about, there is HERE the quick opener Black Witchery listen.

Many of the songs follow the concept of fast heavy metal, and I particularly like the straight forward numbers Watchout! and Defiler fallen. Songs like this bring variety Slave to the Master, which initially seems like a ballad, but after two minutes mutates into a nice banger. The regular vinyl version sounds fast Nosferatu and the successful, traditional one Crystal Light out of.

A useful addition

After an intro and eight fast heavy metal songs, the regular vinyl version is completed at just under forty minutes. Here comes the CD version with the two songs self-released in 2020 Backslider and Red Hot in the game. The content is one hundred percent similar to the other material Beyond The Bells Appropriately, the two titles sound a bit broader and brighter in terms of sound.

Fits Backslider perfect for the current material, so wears Red Hot another little rocking kick Mötley Crüe in itself. It was a good idea to make the two songs available to us again in this way. That’s another reason to take a look at the digital silverware.

Conclusion
Despite or precisely because the current ones Scavenger have nothing to do with the original band from the 1980s, you should Beyond The Bells definitely pay attention. From the old-style metal base to the dirty, powerful voice of the front woman, everything sounds authentic and recorded with love. A fine recommendation for traditional metalheads. 7,5 / 10
