An 84-year-old pensioner was the victim of a phone scam on Friday in the canton of Schaffhausen. A stranger called him pretending to be a transnational prosecutor. He claimed the senior’s sister was involved in a road accident and rammed into a group of French pedestrians at high speed.

The scammer pushed the lie by claiming that she had killed someone, that she would be brought to France and that she had been remanded in custody before being presented to the judge. To prevent her from going to prison, he announced to the pensioner that he had to immediately pay his bail, estimated at 50,000 francs.

The poor octogenarian then withdrew the requested sum and went, according to the scammer’s instructions, to Saint-Louis, France, to hand over the money to an unknown person. Before noticing later that he had been cheated, says the Schaffhausen police who warn against a resurgence of this kind of scam by telephone.
