Juneau School Board Tackles Budget, Prioritizes Essential Services Amidst uncertainty
JUNEAU, AK – the Juneau School Board convened to address budget add-backs, ultimately approving the top three priorities, with a strong emphasis on resolving existing deficits. Key decisions included scaling back global free breakfast and allocating funds for crucial administrative roles.
Board member amber Frommherz advocated for prioritizing outstanding bills, stating, “I would argue that these known bills, food and transportation alone, could be what we prioritize tonight, if we look at this budget holistically.” This sentiment resonated with the board, leading to an agreement to address deficits in these areas.
Concerns were raised regarding the financial sustainability of the district’s food service program. Board member Herbert suggested potential cutbacks, such as eliminating hot lunch and free breakfast. Board member Mackey further emphasized the necessity of debt control for future budget balance.
“It’s very unpopular for somebody to come out and say, ‘you know, let’s cut back on the quality of the food,'” Mackey acknowledged. “But you know, we’ve made a lot of strides to realy improve the food. Make sure there’s fresh options. Make sure that it’s wholesome food, but you know there, there is a cost to that.” He added, “And if you’re a kid that doesn’t get three meals a day, I’m not sure stressing fresh vegetables over them not being able to afford or obtain a meal at all, is a better choice.”
Consequently, universal free breakfast, with its substantial nearly $3 million price tag, will be discontinued next school year, ranked 12th on the priority list.
In other meaningful decisions, the board approved the hiring of a librarian for the Dzantik’i Heeni campus, which serves multiple educational programs including Montessori Borealis, the Juneau Community Charter School, and Yaaḵoosgé Daakahídi. additionally, a registrar will be hired for HomeBridge homeschool students, to be based at JDHS.
Board president deedie Sorenson highlighted the administrative need for the registrar position, noting the ongoing challenges in coordinating the HomeBridge program. “Many homebridge parents and students take classes at the university, and because they’re sort of cut off from the high school, they struggle – figuring out what counts and what doesn’t count. And it would be very helpful for them to be able to have one contact person who makes sure that all of their credits are counted,” Sorenson explained. The remaining items on the add-back list did not secure approval. The next regular school board meeting is scheduled for august 12.

Deferred Maintenance: $100,000 will address critical deferred maintenance issues, including roof repairs and HVAC system upgrades, ensuring safe and pleasant learning environments.
Impact on Archyde Students & Teachers
This supplemental funding represents a substantial investment in the future of Archyde’s students. The infusion of resources will directly impact the quality of education, providing teachers with the tools they need to succeed and students with the opportunities to thrive.
Specifically, the funding will:
- Reduce Class Sizes: The hiring of additional staff, notably in special education, will contribute to smaller class sizes, allowing teachers to provide more individualized attention to students.
- Enhance Curriculum: Updated technology and learning materials will enable teachers to deliver more engaging and effective lessons, aligning with current educational standards.
- Improve Student Outcomes: By addressing critical needs in areas like special education and school safety, the funding is expected to contribute to improved student outcomes, including higher test scores and graduation rates.
- Support Teacher Retention: Investing in professional development and providing adequate resources demonstrates the school board’s commitment to supporting teachers, possibly improving teacher retention rates.

The accomplished securing of this supplemental funding wasn’t solely a result of legislative action. The Archyde PTA played a pivotal role, launching a thorough advocacy campaign that included:
Letter-Writing Campaigns: Hundreds of letters where sent to state legislators, highlighting the urgent needs of Archyde schools.
Public Forums: The PTA organized public forums to raise awareness about the funding shortfall and gather community input.
Meetings with Legislators: PTA representatives met directly with state legislators to advocate for increased funding.
Social Media Campaign: A targeted social media campaign amplified the PTA’s message and engaged a wider audience.
This demonstrates the power of community involvement in shaping educational policy and securing vital resources for local schools.Parent involvement and school funding are intrinsically linked.
Long-Term Financial stability & Future Funding Opportunities
While this supplemental funding provides immediate relief, the school board is committed to ensuring long-term financial stability. Discussions are already underway regarding potential bond measures and grant applications to secure additional funding for future projects. The board is also exploring opportunities to streamline operations and reduce costs without compromising the quality of education.
Key areas of focus for future funding include:
Career and Technical education (CTE) Programs: Expanding CTE programs to provide students with valuable skills for the workforce.
Early Childhood Education: Investing in early childhood education programs to prepare students for success in kindergarten and beyond.
Mental Health Services: Increasing access to mental health services for students and staff.
Understanding School Funding Models
The state’s school funding model is complex, relying on a combination of state aid, local property taxes, and federal funding. Supplemental funding, like the recent allocation to Archyde, is often awarded based on unforeseen circumstances, such as increased state revenue or specific legislative priorities. Understanding these funding mechanisms is crucial for advocating for equitable and adequate resources for all schools.
