School Closures & Delays: Winter Storm Impacts [Year]

by

Classes are cancelled Wednesday for multiple school districts across Texas as the aftermath of recent winter storms continues to disrupt travel and pose safety concerns. The closures extend from the Houston area to Central Texas and North Texas, impacting hundreds of thousands of students.

In the Houston region, several districts initially announced closures for Monday, January 26th, due to freezing temperatures and icy road conditions. Alvin ISD, Alief ISD, and Aldine ISD were among those that shuttered campuses, with Alvin College also cancelling classes. As of Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the extent of continued closures remains significant.

Central Texas is experiencing widespread school closures as well. Austin ISD, along with Bartlett ISD, Bastrop ISD, and dozens of other districts in the region, have announced that schools will be closed on Wednesday. Colleges and universities are also affected, with Austin Community College, Concordia University, Huston-Tillotson University, Texas State Technical College’s Williamson County campus, and UT Austin all suspending operations. CapMetro, the region’s public transportation system, delayed service until noon on Monday due to icy conditions, further complicating travel.

North Texas school districts initially responded to a winter storm on January 24, 2026, with closures. Allen ISD, Birdville ISD, Carroll ISD, Cedar Hill ISD, and Coppell ISD were among the first to announce cancellations. The list expanded to include Dallas ISD, Duncanville ISD, Frisco ISD, and many others. As of today, February 18, 2026, the situation remains fluid, with districts continuing to assess conditions and make decisions regarding further closures.

Arlington ISD, Carrolton-Farmers Branch ISD, Dallas ISD, Denton ISD, DeSoto ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, Irving ISD, and Mansfield ISD were all listed as being closed on both Monday and Tuesday, January 25th and 26th, 2026.

The decision to close schools is based on concerns for student and staff safety, as well as the difficulty of navigating icy and snow-covered roads. School officials are continuing to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as needed. CBS Austin reported that they will continue updating the story with the latest school closure information.
