A fire was reported Thursday morning in a school located on rue de la Paille, in the center of the capital, Brussels firefighters reported. The 600 students of the establishment were evacuated safely.

The fire broke out at the roof level, according to information from Siamu. “The fire was raging in the roof insulation, so much so that it was necessary to partially dismantle the roof to completely extinguish the fire,” explained Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the fire brigade. “The fire is now completely under control, but we must locate and extinguish the last sources of heat. The clearance work will also take some time.”

Several classrooms were damaged by water used to put out the flames. The exact cause of the fire is currently unknown.
