Schuman Roundabout Redevelopment: Transforming the Heart of the European Institutions

Launched in 2015, the Schuman roundabout redevelopment project is finally reaching its completion phase. The Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Planning and Heritage, Ans Persoons (Vooruit. brussels), announces the delivery by Urban. brussels of the permit for the complete redevelopment of the emblematic space, the heart of the European institutions. And the changes are significant, if only in terms of mobility. The section of rue de la Loi, between Schuman and the entrance to Parc du Cinquantenaire, will be transformed into a large tree-lined pedestrian walk. Traffic will be cut there except for emergency or delivery vehicles. Rues Froissart and Rue d’Auderghem will no longer lead to the roundabout and will therefore end in a dead end. Following negotiations with the municipality of Etterbeek, a two-way passage will be created on avenue de la Joyeuse entrance.

These changes make it possible to transform almost three quarters of the roundabout into a shared, mainly pedestrian zone where only cyclists, public transport and taxis will be able to pass. Benches will be installed there and nearly 100 new trees will be planted. The Cinquantenaire park will thus be connected to the square and it will be possible to reach the Council and Commission buildings on foot following a long promenade.

Cars keep the last quarter between avenue de Cortenbergh and rue de la Loi. “Today we have a project for a more green and friendly place, safer for pedestrians and cyclists and more accessible for PRMs,” rejoices the Brussels Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) .

The future square will accommodate a separate cycle path all around to put an end to this black spot for cyclist mobility that is the current roundabout. Buses will also have their own strip.

Mirror towards Europe

Currently particularly unwelcoming, the heart of the roundabout will be completely redesigned with the installation of stands and a large metal canopy with a mirror effect. Everything will be covered by a green roof. Events can be organized there thanks to the presence of the stands while the heart of the square will be much more accessible thanks to the reduction in car traffic.

The facilities will be on one level to facilitate mobility for PRMs.

Work is due to begin very soon, before the end of the year. It is Beliris who will be in charge. On the budget side, the costs are estimated at 25 million euros. As the project is integrated into the federal recovery plan, Beliris will be able to count on European funding of 21 million euros. The rest will be his responsibility.

“From a car roundabout, Schuman can now be transformed into a real public square in the heart of the European district. Designed by the architects COBE and BRUT, the new Place Schuman will become a new symbol of Europe in Brussels and will mark an important step in the evolution of the European district towards a mixed district on a human scale,” says Ans Persoons.

The precise schedule of work and its duration will be announced soon.
