Neckarsulm Known for its grocery chains Lidl and Kaufland, the Schwarz Group wants to set up its own cloud infrastructure and is examining cooperations with tool manufacturer Würth and energy supplier EnBW. A black company spokesman said on Friday dpa request, corresponding discussions have been running since this year.
The aim is to build an independent cloud infrastructure with European security standards – initially for internal purposes. If the project is successful and in demand, it is also possible to invite other companies to the cloud as a service provider. It is planned that the cloud infrastructure will be ready by the end of 2020.
The cloud market is currently dominated by US corporations such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google or the Chinese Internet giant Alibaba. The Federal Government had recently presented plans according to which German and European IT providers should join forces to form a network in which companies can securely and independently store and process their data. This cloud network called Gaia-X should pave the way to digital business models, among other European companies, it was said.
The Schwarz spokesman said his company's push was not directly related to Gaia-X. He emphasized, however, that if one collaborated with other successful companies, one's own cloud could quickly become a bigger topic. Schwarz made more than 100 billion euros in sales in 2018. At Würth, it was 13.6 million last year and EnBW 20.6 billion euros.
First, the "Heilbronner Stimme" had reported on the proposed cooperation. The head of the Würth IT division, Jürgen Häckel, told the newspaper, Würth already offers data center services, one could offer this expertise for a common cloud solution. EnBW cloud project manager Frank Brech said that one sees a European cloud platform as a step in the right direction. "It is essential to focus on the cybersecurity of such infrastructures."
More: Minister of Economic Affairs Altmaier crashes and hurts before he can announce his plans for Gaia X. Even without him, the federal government calls first details about the European cloud.
