The wonderful folk of Esmeralda Galda and To Athena
Originally from Zurich and Lucerne respectively, the two musicians re-enchant the world with “Wältuntergang”, the end of the world in Swiss German.
Two mavericks from the German-speaking scene meet. Tiffany Limacher from Lucerne, aka To Athena, who grew up in a family of luthiers and has an all-consuming passion for strings. Laura Bärlocher from Zurich, who signed Esmeralda Galda, fond of plastic unicorns, cacti and strange pop.
A five-track album has just been released, titled “Wältuntergang”, the end of the world in schwiizertütsch, which launches this breathtaking duo.
They are misty visions, the marshes, the flowing water, probable metaphors of indescribable emotions (“Goldigs Lächle”, the golden smile). These are refrains like a drinking song to move forward together on uncertain paths (“Wältuntergang”).
On a song sometimes solitary like a secret psalm, sometimes dazzling when a choir ignites, the ensemble mixes folk and the Alps, electronics and the contemporary, in a caressing, sometimes incredible way, halfway between Sophie Hunger and The Next Queens. Marvellous.
