Vienna (OTS) – “The news of the unexpected death of Heidemarie Uhl, one of the very big authorities in Austrian commemoration and remembrance culture, leaves me deeply dismayed. The contemporary historian, who focused on the period of nationalism, was unshakable in her advocacy against anti-Semitism. With a differentiated, objective and calm perspective, she set decisive research impulses for the memory culture of this city and this country and shaped a generation of young scientists*. Her much too early death leaves a gaping gap in research,” says City Councilor for Culture and Science, Veronica Kaup-Hasler. “It was not until 2023 that her tireless commitment led to the interdisciplinary research focus on contemporary anti-Semitism that she coordinated at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).”
“I was always deeply impressed by the extraordinary linguistic precision and comprehensibility of the historian and Germanist, which was due to the constant effort to make us aware of what would only too gladly be forgotten,” Kaup-Hasler continues. “My heartfelt sympathy goes to her family, her friends and fellow academics.”
Heidemarie Uhl conducted research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and taught at the universities of Vienna and Graz. Most recently, Heidemarie Uhl was on the advisory board for the erection of commemorative and commemorative monuments for the City of Vienna; moreover, she was recently part of the scientific commission in the competition for the permanent contextualisation of the Lueger monument. In 2018 Heidemarie Uhl was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the State of Vienna.
