Scientific discovery: there is a connection between intestinal microbiota and bone health

Indeed, without gravity to stimulate bone growth, bones can become brittle and weaken. The researchers found an increase in two families of bacteria in the stools of mice that have stayed in space (source 1). By studying these bacteria, they discovered that they would be able to manufacture molecules stimulating bone growth. THE results were confirmed by blood tests which showed the presence of these molecules, suggesting that the intestinal microbiota might play an important role in the regulation of bone health. This discovery might lead to new treatments for osteoporosis, a disease characterized by loss of bone density and increased bone fragility, often associated with aging. By providing the right dose of these repair bacteria to the intestinal florait would be possible to promote bone growth and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Although scientists recognize that it is still too early to say that the intestinal microbiota can really contribute to the reconstitution of bones, this discovery is very promising and might open new avenues of research in the treatment of bone diseases.
