Mapping the Abyssal Frontier Around Christmas and Cocos Islands

Deep beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean, an international team of researchers has uncovered 149 new marine species, revealing an astonishing web of biodiversity across a network of understudied volcanic seamounts. Published in Deep-Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, the June study details creatures ranging from elusive sea cucumbers to parasitic barnacles, mapping a dark, abyssal seafloor that has largely escaped modern scientific inquiry until now.

The Indian Ocean accounts for roughly one-fifth of the global ocean area, with 90 percent of its waters plunging deeper than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Yet compared to its Pacific and Atlantic counterparts, its deep-sea ecosystems remain remarkably neglected by researchers. To address this data gap, an expedition surveyed dozens of volcanic underwater mountains surrounding the Christmas and Cocos islands, located southwest of Jakarta between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Researchers surveyed depths ranging from 94 to 5,431 meters (308 to 17,818 feet). They charted a rugged seafloor punctuated by ancient volcanic seamounts aged between 40 and 120 million years old, with some formations stretching up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) across. Tim O’Hara, a marine scientist at Museums Victoria in Melbourne and lead author of the study, explained the scope of the uncharted territory to Mongabay. “People had been around the islands in shallow water before, but no one had looked at life in the deep. It was a massive hole in the data,” O’Hara noted.

Overcoming Logistic Hurdles With the RV Investigator

Reaching these isolated waters demands serious logistical endurance. Departing from Darwin on Australia’s northern coast, it takes nearly seven days of transit to arrive at Christmas Island. The Cocos islands lie an additional 960 kilometers (nearly 600 miles) southwest of Christmas. Both island groups serve as external territories of Australia.

In 2020, two years prior to formally establishing the Indian Ocean Territories Marine Parks, the Australian government greenlit the expedition to inventory local marine life. Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) commissioned a custom-built research vessel, the RV Investigator, in 2014 to expand national deep-sea capabilities. Previously, Australian marine research focused primarily on coastal waters off the mainland, rarely exceeding depths of 3,000 meters (9,842 feet). The RV Investigator pushed those operational limits, enabling scientists to sample waters plunging down to 5,000 meters (3.10 miles).

Operating across 22 mapped seamounts, the 33-member international research team documented how massive underwater mountains—rising at least 1,000 meters above the surrounding seafloor—disrupt deep-sea currents. These submerged geological titans function as vital nutrient oases, funneling sustenance toward filter feeders and other specialized abyssal organisms.

Naming the Abyss: From Green Eyes to the Eye of Sauron

Among the 149 newly described taxa are specimens that highlight the sheer variety of life adapted to extreme pressure and perpetual darkness. The findings include a sea cucumber belonging to the genus Oneirophanta, a new fish species from the greeneye family (Chlorophthalmus), and a parasitic barnacle from the genus Rhizolepas. As researchers cataloged the physical geography of the region, they also encountered dramatic geological features, including a massive volcanic caldera—a bowl-shaped crater formed by ancient eruptions.

Located at a depth of 3,103 meters (10,180 feet) and roughly 282 kilometers (175 miles) from Christmas Island, the striking geological formation prompted a playful nod to literary history. Because its central structure evokes an ominous gaze, the research team dubbed the caldera the “Eye of Sauron.” While scientists did not directly sample inside this specific crater, specimens recovered from nearby seamounts confirmed that animal communities shift as depth increases.

Surviving in these submerged environments requires immense biological resilience. Jim Barry, a senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California who was not involved in the study, underscored the harsh realities of the zone to Mongabay, pointing out that life here is entirely dependent on organic material drifting down from surface waters.
