Scott Darling didn’t have a long NHL career. He played five seasons and had the opportunity to play 126 games in the Bettman circuit, and he decided to retire at the start of the 2020-2021 season.

Darling struggled with substance abuse issues during his career and resorted to the NHL’s aid program.
He says it was like being in prison, in the sense that he felt controlled by the league.
The former guard also says the problem is that the people running the program don’t want to help.

And you can sense in his words that he was really emotional when talking about this situation.
Scott Darling even advises players to seek the necessary support elsewhere because they are assured.
It’s unclear what exactly happened to Darling when he applied to the program, but to hear him talk, he never received the support he needed. And if that’s indeed the case, that’s a big problem. It goes a long way, all that.
This is (another) dark cloud that is hovering over the head of the NHL, and it is once again the image of the league that is taking a hit.
