Scottie Barnes sees himself as a playmaker

« He is a player of the future”. It is with these words that Masai Ujirithe GM of the Raptors, described Scottie Barnes, winner of the “Rookie Of The Year” trophy last season. Listed at 2m01 and a little over 100 kilos, the young Raptor effectively embodies this new generation of basketball players who are redefining the logic of position by their “all-around” profile, in order to evolve in almost every position.

« I don’t know how to describe it added Masai Ujiri. ” I don’t know what his position is. He’s one of those guys who just plays before getting a job, and who turns out to be an incredible player. »

To that, Scottie Barnes has an answer: if he had to choose, he would be a playmaker.

« I’ve always been a point guard in fact, always had point guard instincts » so he said, before all the same recalling that he could also shine on absolutely all positions. ” But whatever the team needs, I can do it, I can play every position. So I try not to limit myself to just one position. »

“Playmaker” for some, winger or strong winger for others, Scottie Barnes is quite simply a ball carrier, an initiator of the game. In any case, it is in this role that he has twice shone, first at Florida State on the college circuit, where he won the Sixth Man Of The Year trophy in the ACC conference (10.3 points, 4 rebounds, 4.1 assists), then in Toronto last year, where he of course won the Rookie Of The Year trophy.

In short, the use of Scottie Barnes is optimal when the boy has the leather in his hands as often as possible. And that, Nick Nurse obviously understood that.

« He will have opportunities [sur le poste de meneur de jeu]. He loves this role. He is an organizer, a conductor noted the Raptors coach. ” He really likes this point guard position, he likes to be labeled like that. So we’ll see if we can develop this pattern a bit. »
