For the construction of a battery cell plant in Martorell, Seat is applying for funding from “PERTE VEC”, two Spanish industrial funding programs specifically for projects involving electric and connected vehicles. The Spanish Volkswagen subsidiary wants to create 400 direct and 100 indirect jobs in Spain. “We will invest an additional 300 million euros in the construction of the plant here in Martorell, which will also assemble the cells that Power Co will manufacture at the Gigafactory in Sagunto in Valencia,” explains Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Seat SA

The battery cell plant will cover an area of around 64,000 square meters, roughly the size of nine football pitches. With the connection to production hall 10, in which some electric car models of the Volkswagen Group, as well as the upcoming Cupra Raval, are manufactured, the logistical processes are to be optimized and the ecological footprint further reduced. Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks and be completed in 2025.

Wayne Griffiths sees the plant as a “key moment for our industry” and wants to “make Spain a hub for electric mobility in Europe”. As part of the “Future: Fast Forward” project, Seat is making the largest industrial investment in the history of Spain at around 10 billion euros. “Together we are putting Spain on electric wheels,” says Wayne Griffiths, thanking public administrations, trade unions, employees and partners.
