Second Suspect Arrested in Durban Human Trafficking Case Linked to Businessman

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a human trafficking and sexual exploitation case tied to a Durban businessman, law enforcement authorities confirmed. The 48-year-old man handed himself over to authorities at the Durban North Police Station, joining a 65-year-old businessman who faces multiple criminal charges stemming from a 2022 police rescue operation.

The Surrender at Durban North Police Station

The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, widely known as the Hawks, reported that the 48-year-old suspect surrendered himself at the Durban North Police Station on Thursday, August 13. According to Joburg ETC, the individual faces charges including trafficking in persons, sexual assault, and kidnapping. Following his surrender, he was scheduled to make his initial appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

This development follows the arrest of the primary suspect in the investigation. The main accused, a 65-year-old Durban businessman, was taken into custody on August 11 under a J50 warrant of arrest. According to Joburg ETC, he currently faces 20 charges, encompassing human trafficking, kidnapping, and sexual assault.

Origins of the Probe: The 2022 Rescue in Eldorado Park

The criminal investigation traces back to a rescue operation conducted in 2022. According to KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase, law enforcement officers rescued four young women who had been brought from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg to the Durban area.

Investigators uncovered a recruitment pattern. The victims were allegedly lured through false job opportunities advertised using a fake SIM card. Once they arrived at a property located in Durban North, they were subjected to forced sexual exploitation. The current sweep by the Hawks aims to dismantle the network responsible for luring, transporting, and exploiting these victims.

Court Proceedings and Detention Status

The legal proceedings surrounding the primary suspect have encountered delays. Following a brief initial appearance after his August 11 arrest, the 65-year-old businessman’s case was adjourned. He was detained at the Westville Prison Hospital.

Legal restrictions currently shield the identity of the main suspect from public disclosure. According to Joburg ETC, because he has not yet formally pleaded to the sexual assault charge against him, a court-ordered prohibition prevents the publication of his name. Defense and prosecution teams are currently preparing for a formal bail application, which is scheduled for August 25.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have emphasized that the investigation remains active. Authorities continue to scrutinize the network connecting the two arrested individuals to the 2022 Eldorado Park recruitment scheme, with further court processes expected as prosecutors consolidate the case files.
