A security guard hired by University of California San Francisco (UCSF) was arrested suspected of stealing Apple devices that would be destined to the institution’s employees. The total damage amounts to more than US$200 thousand (about R$957 thousand).

According to police, the man’s name is Niyja Bassard, 24 years old. In interview with San Francisco Chroniclethe police also said that the thefts took place between May 2022 and June 2023. No signs of break-in were found at the crime scene.

According to investigations, Bassard had access to several buildings, which allowed him to carry out the thefts without being detected. The subtracted devices were essential tools for university staff to carry out medical treatments and procedures.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, represented by Brooke Jenkinshighlighted the seriousness of thefts like this one, which affect both small businesses and large institutions, as was the case at UCSF.

In cases like this, we are talking about equipment that could have been used to save lives or treatments. We do not downplay or minimize the seriousness of this criminal conduct in any case and will seek to hold individuals accountable.

If found guilty, Bassard could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. As the legal process continues, he has been ordered to stay clear of all UCSF buildings. Bassard’s next hearing is scheduled for July 27th.
