On Thursday, Tunisian Prime Minister Naglaa Boudin discussed with her Interior Minister, Kamal al-Fiqi, the security situation in the country, especially the state of Sfax, in the east of the country, after it witnessed confrontations between residents and African immigrants that led to the death of a Tunisian youth, which necessitated the intervention of the security authorities.

The official Tunisian News Agency stated that the meeting between Naglaa Boudin and Kamal El-Feki dealt with the security situation in the country in general and the situation in Sfax and Sbeitla in the Wilayat of Kasaria in particular, knowing that the latter witnessed the death of a young man in mysterious circumstances that later led to confrontations between a number of residents and the security forces.

The government statement, which was reported by the official agency, did not add any other information.

Fawzi Mesmoudi, a spokesman for the Public Prosecution Office in the coastal city of Sfax, said earlier that those accused of killing 41-year-old Tunisian Nizar Amri are under investigation for premeditated murder, according to the Associated Press.

One of Nizar’s relatives said that he was killed by a treacherous stab that dropped him to the ground, covered in his own blood.

Masmoudi indicated that 22 immigrants from sub-Saharan countries were arrested for interrogation in connection with crimes in the region.

He added that preliminary data indicates the involvement of a group of sub-Saharan Africans in the assault on the victim, Nizar Omari. They were identified and three of them were arrested.

Sfax, located on the eastern coast of Tunisia, is a major departure point for migrants and refugees planning to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Thousands of people, mostly from sub-Saharan countries, flocked to the city to set off in unprecedented numbers to cross into Italy in small boats.

After the burial of the Tunisian Nizar bin Ibrahim Al-Omari, on Tuesday, the residents of the area cut off a main road and burned tires.
