This was reported by Birmex on February 26 through its social networks. In a statement they detailed that they were 15 males and 45 females of the Santa Gertrudis breed, which have a pure blood type that meets the appropriate specifications for plasma production.
Pedro Zenteno Santaella, CEO of Birmex, was the one who received the specimens at the Hyperimmune Plasma Production Unit, located on the Mexico-Pachuca free highway, in the municipality of Tecámac, State of Mexico, and join the 80 copies that are already in the laboratory facilities.
Birmex clarified that all specimens they will receive the treatment and care in accordance with the provisions of the Animal Protection Law.

Birmex has great experience in the elaboration of serum from horse, it has worldwide recognition as one of the best laboratories producing antiviperine and antiacranic serums and has the equipment and facilities necessary to develop horse serum to treat Covid-19.
The National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (ONE) and professionals from Institute of Biotechnology.
It is worth mentioning that the equines were sent after the Health Secretary made the formal request for the production of that plasma. However, the specialists clarified that this equine serum is not a vaccine and it is a complementary clinical treatment and therefore cannot be considered as a preventive resource.
These antibodies are separated from the plasma of the horses to be administered to COVID-19 patients, a disease that until now has generated 185,257 deaths in Mexico.
Even on January 11 at the night conference dedicated to COVID-19, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, the Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, explained that its use achieves a reduction of up to 40% in the mortality of people .
This is a very well known, very proven and very safe technology. Experience with this treatment in other countries has shown a 40% decrease in mortality in people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the recovery time is shorter than in those who do not receive equine serum.
In countries like Costa Rica, Horses were also immunized with COVID-19 proteins to induce their immune system to produce specific antibodies. The government of that country reported that the plasma is 100 times more powerful than that obtained from human beings.
Also, in Argentina ehe treatment is generating high expectations, after demonstrating more than 90% efficacy in a group of internees at the Corrientes Home School Field Hospital. Diego Farizano, head of the Department of Laboratory and Clinical Biochemistry of the Hospital explained to Infobae how hyperimmune equine serum is administered to patients.
“We follow the protocol that indicates the application of the serum to people between 18 and 79 years old who have moderate to severe pneumonia or respiratory failure with symptoms within the sixth to tenth day of symptoms after a general evaluation according to the evolution clinic, and after a tomography and saturometry carried out. But they will not be able to receive it if they first received convalescent plasma, ”Farizano explained.
And he added: “The patient is given two doses of 3 to 5 milliliters each 48 hours apart. The main effect of the therapy is to decrease the inflammation of the lungs. This means that they are not referred to intensive therapy with mechanical ventilation ”.
