Seismologists target Adana 2024-03-15 19:17:53

On Sunday, an earthquake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, in the open Mediterranean south of Myra and Phoenice, to the east of the Megistis complex, brought to the fore again the faults that run through Asia Minor and the danger they pose to the individual areas.

A few days ago one of the most famous experts on earthquakes in Turkey, Professor Naci Gyorur, warned that there are areas where an earthquake is imminent earlier than Istanbul. Two seismologists are now sounding the alarm about the possibility of an earthquake and even point out that according to the data they have, the Adana valley needs special attention, perhaps even more than Istanbul.

The lecturer of the School of Civil Engineering of Gazi University, in Ankara dr. Suleiman Babal said that after the earthquakes of February 6, which also hit Adana, the issue of earthquakes came to the fore. The professor is also the founding chairman of the Gaza University Earthquake Research Center and provided the following information about the faults that may affect Adana.

“There are faults that will affect Adana and create earthquakes. There are faults such as the Karatas-Yumurtalik fault, the Misis-Adirin fault, the Alexandrettas fault, the Kozan fault, the Savrun fault, the Saibeili fault. Faults are recognized as sources of earthquake risk in Adana. These faults that I mentioned are faults that will cause earthquakes of magnitude 6-7,” said Professor Pambal.

There were earthquakes around Caesarea in 1702, 1717 and 1845, in which tens of thousands of people died. Here, there are faults that are the elements of the Central Anatolian fault system. These are always active faults. “In other words, these faults caused 7-7.5 magnitude earthquakes, destroyed Caesarea, and since tens of thousands of lives have been lost, such earthquakes will definitely affect Adana and its surroundings, especially the northern districts,” he added. .

The lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, at Tsoukourova University (Cilicia Plain) dr. Hasan Cetin takes part in studies supported by TÜBİTAK, Civil Protection Agency of Turkey (AFAD) and General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) on active fault lines in Adana and surrounding provinces.

Cetin participates in the Adana section. Within a year, excavations will be carried out on the faults whose positions have been identified and characterization studies will be completed on the activity of these faults. Accordingly, more accurate forecasts will be obtained based on the seismicity of Adana and its surroundings, the active faults and the magnitude of the earthquakes they may cause.

Earthquake in Turkey: Beware of the earthquake fault that reaches Cyprus

“There is a branch of the East Anatolia Fault, which continues around Osmanige and reaches the sea from Yumurtalik-Karatas. It continues into the sea for some distance and reaches the western tip of Cyprus. The length of this fault in the sea is a matter that needs to be studied,” said Professor Cetin.
