A sweeping meteorological disturbance has triggered a red weather alert across 11 regions of Peru, bringing an intense mix of heavy rainfall, high-altitude snowfall, electrical storms, and fierce winds that defy the typical seasonal calendar. Issued by the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi), the warning covers vast expanses of the country’s southern and central highlands, as well as coastal sectors, posing immediate challenges to regional infrastructure and transportation networks.

With freezing temperatures driving snow down to elevated mountain corridors and heavy precipitation threatening unstable soils, local authorities have urged heightened vigilance as communities grapple with unseasonably aggressive meteorological conditions.

An Unseasonal Phenomenon Hits Andean and Coastal Provinces

The current emergency stems from Senamhi’s Alert No. 368-2026, which designates a red alert status for middle and high-altitude Andean zones, coastal strips, and coastal valleys across Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Ica, Junín, Lima, Moquegua, Puno, and Tacna. According to regional meteorological assessments, these downpours are carrying unexpected force for this time of the year, typically characterized by drier conditions ahead of the austral summer.

In Arequipa, all eight provinces face high probabilities of moderate to heavy rain. José Luis Ticona Jara, a meteorologist at Senamhi Arequipa, noted the anomalous timing of the event. Beyond the rainfall, Senamhi’s Alert No. 369-2026 establishes an orange alert for heavy snowfall affecting six provinces in Arequipa: Arequipa, Caylloma, Castilla, Condesuyos, La Unión, and Caravelí. Localities situated above 4,000 meters above sea level are bearing the brunt of the cold surge, experiencing localized blizzards, hail, sleet, and winds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour.

Snow accumulations in these elevated sectors threaten to surpass 8 centimeters, creating treacherous driving conditions along critical mountain highways. Transportation links connecting major hubs like Arequipa to Puno and Cusco face imminent delays or temporary closures.
