Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, who is retiring on Sunday after 14 years in the Senate, learned live on QUB radio on Friday that the murderer of his daughter Julie Boisvenue will potentially be eligible for day parole in September.

During the interview, host Benoit Dutrizac emphasized to Mr. Boisvenu, based on a TVA Nouvelles report published in June 2022 citing Correctional Service Canada, that the murderer Hugo Bernier will be eligible to obtain temporary absences without escort and even semi-release from September 21, 2024.

“You’re teaching me that! I have been following this case for years, because what I want to do, when he gets out of prison, is that there are no other Julie Boisvenus, but you teach me that », replied, stunned, Mr. Boisvenu.

“I think the Commission has just missed an opportunity to respect the charter of victims’ rights, which has a fundamental right, the right to information. How does this come out in the media before the family is informed?” continued the father who is campaigning for better recognition of the rights of victims and for tougher sentences for criminals.

“Even though we adopted a charter of victims’ rights in 2015. This charter, for 8 years, has been flouted,” he added.

Otherwise, Mr. Boisvenu took advantage of his meeting with Benoit Dutrizac and Richard Martineau to look back on his career in the Senate.
