Dakar, April 25 (APS) – The Gambia has renounced an increase in customs duties levied on cement coming from Senegal upon entry into its territory, APS learned on Wednesday from the Senegalese government and the Chamber of Mines of Senegal (CMDS).

During his visit to Gambia last Saturday, Bassirou Diomaye Faye discussed with his Gambian counterpart, Adama Barrow, “the increase in the tax on cement from Senegal, the measure of which was suspended pending the circular which should be signed to report it,” we read in the press release from the Council of Ministers of Senegal on Wednesday, April 24.

The CMDS, an association made up of around fifty mining companies, confirms that The Gambia has renounced the increase in customs duties levied on cement coming from Senegal.

”Following the cancellation of the increase in entry duties into Gambia on Senegalese cement, the Chamber of Mines of Senegal sends its congratulations to the Senegalese and Gambian heads of state,” writes its president, Ousmane Mbaye , in a press release sent to the APS.

Mr. Mbaye, also general manager of Dangote Cement Senegal, one of the country’s main cement producers, adds that ”the Chamber of Mines of Senegal welcomes the cancellation of the 500% increase in entry duties on cement from Senegal.

”Once aware of the measure that occurred last week, the CMDS immediately informed the Senegalese authorities. Who raised the issue with their Gambian counterparts during the visit […] in Banjul of the head of state of Senegal, he says.

Ousmane Mbaye specifies that this ”increase [a] was finally suspended pending its administrative formalization.

He points out that ”the Gambian market represents an important outlet for cement exports from Senegal and therefore contributes to the balance of its trade balance”.

The CMDS’s ”main mission” is to ”promote the Senegalese mining sector” and ”serve as an interlocutor with the government, civil society, etc.”
