Senegalese customs officials have reported significant seizures of illicit drugs and prohibited medications throughout February, targeting trafficking networks in the regions of Kaolack, Fatick, and Kédougou. The operations highlight a concentrated effort to combat the illegal trade of pharmaceuticals and narcotics within the country, with authorities recovering millions of francs CFA worth of contraband.
The most substantial seizure occurred in the Kaolack and Fatick regions, where customs agents intercepted a vehicle carrying prohibited medications valued at 58 million francs CFA. The haul included antibiotics, aphrodisiacs, and veterinary products, raising concerns about the potential public health risks associated with unregulated pharmaceuticals. This operation underscores the ongoing challenges in controlling the distribution of potentially dangerous drugs within Senegal.
Alongside the pharmaceutical seizures, authorities also recovered 15 kilograms of cannabis in the Ndiba-Ndiayène area. In a particularly unusual development, two individuals, aged 60 and 62, were apprehended attempting to transport the drugs concealed on their bodies although disguised as religious leaders. Both individuals have been taken into custody and are facing legal proceedings.
Further south, in the Kédougou region, customs officials dismantled an illegal depot of medications in Moussala, seizing goods estimated to be worth 12 million francs CFA. One individual was arrested in connection with the operation and handed over to the relevant judicial authorities.
The Directorate General of Senegalese Customs announced the results of these operations via social media, showcasing their commitment to tackling illicit trafficking.

These recent successes build on ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal trade routes and protect public health. The value of the seized medications and narcotics – totaling 70 million francs CFA – demonstrates the scale of the challenge facing Senegalese authorities. Combating pharmaceutical crime is a critical component of safeguarding public health, as unregulated medications can pose serious risks to consumers.
The arrests of individuals involved in these trafficking operations signal a firm response from law enforcement. The unusual case of the two individuals disguised as religious leaders transporting cannabis highlights the lengths to which traffickers will go to evade detection. The ongoing investigations will likely focus on identifying the source of these illicit goods and dismantling the broader networks involved in their distribution.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the specific types of antibiotics and aphrodisiacs seized, or the intended destination of the contraband. Further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the trafficking networks and to bring all those involved to justice. The Senegalese customs service continues to intensify its operations against illicit trafficking throughout the country.
As Senegalese authorities continue to crack down on illegal trade, the focus will likely remain on strengthening border controls, enhancing intelligence gathering, and collaborating with international partners to disrupt transnational criminal networks. The ongoing commitment to combating illicit trafficking is essential for protecting public health and ensuring the safety and security of Senegalese citizens.
