The conviction of opponent Ousmane Sonko has provoked scenes of violence in Senegal. The balance sheet reports 9 dead including a policeman.

ECOWAS has expressed concern over the “eruption” of violence in the country. In a press release, the sub-regional institution condemns “the violence which targeted the security forces, public property, private property and disturbed public order”. At the same time, it deplores the loss of human life and calls for restraint and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means.

“ECOWAS remains seized of the development of events in Senegal. It calls on all to uphold the country’s laudable reputation as a bastion of peace and stability,” the institution urges.
