In 2012, Senegalese production of fruits and vegetables increased from 905,000 tonnes to 1.6 million tonnes in 2023, an increase of almost 700 tonnes, with Senegal’s exports of these same commodities having increased from 56,000 to 120,000 tonnes during the same period, according to the director of horticulture, Macoumba Diouf.

”Our production of fruits and vegetables has increased from 905,000 tonnes in 2012 to 1.6 million tonnes now. Exports increased from 56,000 tonnes in 2012 to 120,000 tonnes now.announced the said director, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Company for the exploitation of the market of national interest and the station of large aircraft (SEMIG) with horticulturists, traders and transporters, Thursday January 11, in Diamniadio.

Jobs generated by horticulture increased during the same period, according to Macoumba Diouf.

”A significant part of horticultural production is intended to supply the Senegalese market”he recalled.

These statistics lead Macoumba Diouf to say that ”the horticultural sub-sector is doing very well”.

”Horticultural production has reached, from 2012 to now, unprecedented levels”he added.

Stakeholders in Senegalese horticulture (traders, transporters and horticulturists) benefit from new infrastructure, the market of national interest and the large aircraft station, from an investment of 55 billion FCFA, according to the public authorities.

Built in Diamniadio, in the department of Rufisque, these two infrastructures are used to store and preserve the production of fruits and vegetables transported from the rest of the country and abroad to Dakar.

Built on an area of 33 hectares, the market of national interest and the large aircraft station have a storage capacity of 15,000 tonnes, according to the general director of SEMIG, Fatoumata Niang Ba, according to APS.

Large trucks transporting fruits and vegetables from Senegal or other countries must now unload them at the Diamniadio market of national interest, according to an order from the governor of Dakar, Al Hassan Sall.
