Kannur: Senior CPM leader and former chairperson of the Women’s Commission MC Josephine (73) passed away here today. He died of a heart attack. Josephine, who collapsed at the party congress venue last night, was on a ventilator at the Kannur AKG Hospital.

Josephine, a member of the CPM Central Committee and a member of the State Committee, was one of the key leaders in the party. She was the Chairperson of the Women’s Development Corporation and the Angamaly Municipal Councilor. She has been the Vice President and GCDA Chairperson of the All India Democratic Women’s Association. Vipin is a native of Murukkinpadam.

In May 2017, MC Josephine was appointed Chairperson of the State Commission for Women. But the presidency resigned in June 2021 in the wake of controversy following allegations that the complainant had been mistreated. MC allegedly abused a woman who called to complain about domestic violence on the channel’s phone program. Which led to Josephine’s resignation. With just eight months to go, the CPM demanded his resignation.

MC Josephine was educated at St. Xavier’s College, Aluva and Maharaja’s College. She later worked as a teacher at Chalakudy Spencer College, but resigned to become a full-time party worker.

She was an activist of KSYF, a youth organization, and was active in organizational politics. In 1978, he was elected to the State Committee of the KSYF. She has been part of the Democratic Women’s Association since 1978. He was elected to the CPM Central Committee in 2003. He contested the Idukki Lok Sabha elections in 1989 and the Mattancherry Assembly elections in 2006 but lost.

Her husband is the late PA Mathai, a trade union leader and former Angamaly Municipal Councilor. Son Manu. Daughter-in-law Jyotsna. The grandchildren are Manav Vyas and Kannaki.

MC Josephine’s body will be taken to Ernakulam at 5 pm on Sunday. The CPM Party Congress condoled the death.
