MONTREAL, September 18, 2023 – The school support union at the Marie-Victorin service center, affiliated with the Union of Professional and Office Employees, local section 578 (SEPB-Québec-FTQ), takes the bull by the horns in order to publicize the difficult working conditions in which its members must work.

Indeed, SEPB-578 will visit several schools located on the South Shore of Montreal from September 18 to 21 in order to distribute information leaflets to parents of students on negotiation in the public sector and on working conditions in the public sector. academic support in the schools of this service center.

“80% of our members occupy precarious positions with short hours and the average salary is less than $30,000 per year. The lack of staff and the turnover rate in our staggering environment mean that we must redress the situation quickly. Ultimately, what we want is to improve the quality of services offered to children. We represent the academic support of the Marie-Victorin service center, but these working conditions prevail in several service centers and school boards in Quebec,” explains Jean-François Labonté, president of SEPB-578.

Target parents

SEPB-578 wants to speak directly to parents because they are directly concerned by the quality of services offered to their children.

“We know that parents who pick up their children from school or daycare are very busy and in a hurry, the goal is not to monopolize them for too long, we will simply introduce ourselves and give them our information leaflet. information which summarizes our working conditions, the negotiation situation and our demands. And the parents will see that we are not asking for the moon, it is incomprehensible that this negotiation will drag on to this point. Mr. Legault must understand that academic support is essential to the proper functioning of our schools,” concludes Mr. Labonté.

– September 18, 3 p.m.: Marcelle-Robidoux School, 411 rue Dubuc, Longueuil
