Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic scored a landslide victory in a general election on Sunday, paving the way for him to win a new presidential term and extend his nearly decade-old rule in the Balkan country.
“I got 2,245,000 votes in the first round,” Vucic declared in his victory speech, noting that he had won nearly 60 percent of the vote.
The Serbs voted on Sunday in these elections, in which Vucic presented himself as a guarantor of stability in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Voters were called to choose a president and 250 deputies to parliament, in addition to elections in a number of municipalities.
Unofficial results are expected at a later time. The participation rate is supposed to be ten points higher than that recorded in the 2020 legislative elections, i.e. up to sixty percent, according to the electoral commission.
Earlier, recent opinion polls indicated that the Serbian Progress Party (center-right) led by Vucic.
The start of the war in Ukraine at the end of February changed the course of the campaign, while observers expected earlier that the focus would be on issues such as the environment, corruption and rights.
