(Reuters) – Serena Williams will return to the Fed Cup team for a qualifying tournament against Latvia next month, the U.S. Tennis Federation said on Wednesday.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner, who will win Margaret Court’s 24 titles at the Australian Open next week, last played for the United States in February 2018 after the birth of her daughter.
Williams’ presence in Everett, Washington, for the tie on February 7th and 8th will give the United States a huge boost, as the 38-year-old scored a perfect 13-0 in singles and 3-2 in doubles in the Fed Cup competition since 1999.
The winner will advance to the Fed Cup 2020 final in Budapest from April 14th to 19th.
The US squad can have up to five players and final nominations must be received by January 28th.
