According to the Ulsan Marine Police Station on the 10th, a report was received at around 0:30 a.m. that a person had fallen into the sea off Orangdae in Yeonhwa-ri, Gijang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan.
The Ulsan Coast Guard immediately sent a patrol vessel and a coastal rescue boat from the Gijang Marine Police Station to the scene. However, due to the shallow water at the accident site, there was a risk of running aground if the ship approached, so it had to be detoured towards land.
Accordingly, Sergeant Park Cheol-soo (39), a rescue worker at the Gijang Police Station who arrived at the scene by vehicle, jumped into the sea and rescued the drowning person. Sergeant Park entered the water with his bare body, swam about 200 meters, and swam another 200 meters in, holding the drowning woman in her 50s who was struggling.
Sergeant Park was hospitalized with exhaustion, muscle spasms, and abrasions all over his body due to the effects of swimming about 400 meters round trip. At the time of the accident, the weather off Gijang had a northeast wind of 6 to 8 m/s and a wave height of 0.5 to 1 m.
The rescued woman was also rushed to the hospital and received treatment. It is reported that she has now regained consciousness. It was discovered that the woman slipped and fell into the sea.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Park Cheol-soo also played an active role in the ship explosion that occurred at Yeompo Pier in Ulsan in September 2019. The government awarded the Republic of Korea Civil Service Award to Sergeant Park, who was the first to enter the ship and rescued all 46 people on board during the ship explosion and fire accident at Yeompo Pier in Ulsan. He was a police officer at the time and was promoted to sergeant after receiving the Civil Service Award.
