Serious Train Accident in Ardooie, Belgium: Rail Traffic Suspended

2023-11-14 16:48:00

Rail traffic will be suspended between Lichtervelde and Deinze for several days following the serious accident involving a train and a truck in Ardoye, the Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB) reported on Tuesday. The circumstances of the collision are not yet known.

A serious train accident took place in Ardooie in West Flanders around 11:30 a.m. A train hit a truck and derailed. Out of 50 passengers, 15 were evacuated to hospitals for minor injuries. The condition of the truck driver, who was stopped on a level crossing, is critical.

In addition, according to railway infrastructure manager Infrabel, the damage caused by the accident is particularly significant. “Shuttles are being deployed between Lichtervelde and Deinze. The interruption is expected to last several days”also specified Bart Crols of SNCB.

In December last year, a similar accident already took place on the same level crossing. A truck had been hit by a passenger train. The driver was able to leave his truck in time and four people were slightly injured. “This is precisely why we are removing level crossings and replacing them wherever possible”said Infrabel spokesperson Frédéric Petit. “We carry out checks together with the police and organize all kinds of awareness campaigns. But it is still very important that drivers respect the traffic rules at level crossings.”
